Togo Anti – Govt Group Seeks Foreign Sponsors

Published in World Tuesday, 05 September 2017 11:58

As the campaign against the unconstitutional overthrow of FaureEssozimnaGnassingbé, Togolese President continues, anti-government groups being sponsored by some groups in the Middle East are seeking support from other African countries; includingGhana to launch their onslaught on the Togolese government.

The group, which has defied all odds and caution by the Ghana Police Service on the premise that they are harmless group of people with a common goal to bring back sanity in Togo’s democratic system, managed to hold a press conference to justify their agenda.

Although leadership of the group, Togolese Civil League, denied receiving sponsorship from other groups in the Middle East, they confirmed however that there were other such groups in other countries across Africa, Asia, Europe and America that are championing the same agenda and have interest in seeing to the collapse of the Gnassingbé rule.

It could be recalled that hundreds of thousands of people took the streets to demand the reinstatement of the 1992 constitution which encompasses term limits, two rounds elections and diaspora vote.
The protests, according to the Togolese Civil League, have resulted in the killing of numerous citizens and placed the country on red alert as opposition parties have joined forces to challenge the 50-years-old Gnassingbe dynasty.
The Togolese Civil League, led by Farida Bemba Nabourema and the Vice President of the independent Electoral Commission Francis Pedro Atsuzun have revealed that they will be carrying out a massive demonstration in Togo regardless of what the outcomes might be.
They have however chosen Ghana as the ground to launch their desperate attacks on their government which has the tendency of causing the lives of thousands of people.

For them, the casualties that may arise out of their action are considered as the price the people have to pay for their freedom and for that matter they (the group) is not perturbed by that at all.
The group among other things said the Eyadema family has ruled the country for 50 years and hence must relinquish power to another person even though the Togolese Constitution doesn't set a time limit for the Presidency.
The Group also want to the President to propose a legislation barring himself from contesting the next election because Faure EssozimnaGnassingbéhas already served two terms.
The group also shoot down fears that the rippling effect of their action will affect as there will be huge influx of refugees.
According to them, what happens if they fail in their attempt to force the president out, is none of their business since they are ready to go at any length to ensure that the Gnassingbé dynasty falls.
Asked why they wouldn’t wait for the next election for them to exercise their power and vote the current government out through Constitutional means, Farida Bemba said that is not an option the group is considering.
But analysts say if the group fails in its efforts to bring the current government down, there is a possibility of them becoming another Boko Haram whose action will affect not only Togo but West Africa.
The Vice President of the Independent Electoral Commission, Francis Pedro Atsuzun, told the media in Ghana that, the group cannot trust the electoral processes in Togo since previous elections held were fraught with several cases of fraud.
Farida Bemba Nabourema also said: “Election is just a part of the Democratic process and means of electing our leaders but not a means of telling them how to run our affairs. That is why we cannot wait for another election to tell them enough is enough.”
According to her, the group has taken an entrenched position not to wait for another election but is ready to protest and press forward since “election is not a limited tool of democracy.”
