The Presidential Candidate for the Ghana Union Movement (GUM) of 2020 general elections, Christian Kwabena Andrews (Osofo Kyiriabossom), has underscored the need to empower living spouses to take key decisions during funeral arrangements for their dead marital partners.
He said, “It is about time we pay critical attention to marital crises that spell out between families after the demise of one’s married partner that’s being victimized a lot of people under these circumstances”.
Speaking in an interview with the press over the weekend, the man of God noted that a situation where a living spouse is side-lined with the deceased family taken over entirely the final funeral arrangements is worrying.
Mr. Andrews explained that such a situation has caused more harm than good to children left behind especially when a husband dies.
“Education and general well-being of the living spouses and the children were mostly put in jeopardy particularly if their sources of revenue are taken from them by the deceased family,” he said.
Osofo Kyiriabosom was quick to add that, should the deceased fail to include in his or her will where to be buried and where the final funeral rite should be held, the living spouse should be made the highest decision-making body in association with the deceased family.
He was of the view that having a legal framework that seeks to protect living spouses and children from a deceased family from unfair treatment would go a long way to put an end to these unfortunate incidents.
According to him he has been in constant talks with his team of lawyers to submit a formal proposal to appropriate quarters pushing for such legislation which he termed “Couples Right.”
