The issue involving the missing containers loaded with cables belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) continue to take new twist each passing day.
It is emerging that the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) played a huge role in the cable theft that has become a heavy albatross on the nation’s neck.
The New Crusading GUIDE has gathered that the former Managing Director of ECG, Samuel Dubik Mahama, had cause to write to the GRA when it was obvious that the state revenue was auctioning consignments belonging to the ECG.
What is not clear is whether or not the GRA acceded to the request of the ECG to halt the auctioning of its consignment.
Mr. Mahama in a letter dated March 2, 2023, requested that the GRA should halt the auctioning of ECG/ Power Distribution Service Company Limited (PDS) consignments and containers at the port.
In the said letter, the then ECG Managing Director indicated that the auctioning of the consignments would negatively affect the ECG and the Government of Ghana’s successful defence of the claims made by PDS.
He further urged the GRA to formally write to PDS and inform them of the unclearing of the consignments standing in their name and the intention of the GRA to auction the containers and their contents.
Apart from the March 2, 2023 letter, Mr. Mahama wrote another letter to the GRA on December 19, 2022, and that letter bothered on how containers of Housing Electricity Meters were wrongfully auctioned.
Per documents available to The Inquisitor, the GRA would not be moved by the ECG’s requests to halt the auctioning of their consignments.
The Missing ECG Containers Saga
Some 1,300 containers with items belonging to the ECG vanished from the ports under suspicious circumstances, raising concerns of possible corruption and collusion within the system.
Fourteen individuals, including three Ghanaians and eleven foreigners, have been arrested in connection with the missing containers at the Tema Port.
The suspects were arrested by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) and the Ghana Police Service at Dangfang Company Limited and Ponlok Company Limited both located around the Shai Hills area.
There were earlier reports that forty of the missing ECG containers were found at a warehouse belonging to an Indian national at Kpone, in the Greater Accra Region.
The missing ECG containers have become topical and gained traction in Ghana’s Parliament where Members called for thorough investigations into the matter.
