Ghana has applied to be made a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2022-2023 tenure.
A document sighted by The New Crusading Guide describes Ghana as a reliable member of the United Nations that is praised for her commitment to promoting international peace and security through her continuous contribution to the UN Peacekeeping Operations.
Information indicates that Ghana has been endorsed by the Africa Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to secure the seat. Sources indicate that there are three countries from the African region vying for two slots at the Security Council; Ghana from West Africa and two other countries from central Africa
The document further stated that “Many Ghanaian nationals have served with distinction at the UN as exemplified by the appointment of Kofi Annan as the UN Secretary-General in 1997.
“Ghana is ranked 10th among the top UN troop-contributing countries, and its security personnel is highly respected for their professionalism.” These were some of the accolades touted in the document announcing Ghana’s bid.
The document prepared by the government of Ghana to be submitted to the UN for consideration advances the Country’s vision should it be given the much-coveted position.
These visions include; “Ghana will bring her perspectives, influence and experience in sustainable development, peace and security; and the promotion of human rights in advancing the work of the UNSC.”
Ghana will use her membership of the Security Council to address conflicts caused by environmental factors such as land degradation, desertification, drought and climate change,” among others.
Ghana was admitted to the United Nations on March 8, 1957.
