After a successful implementation of the digitization of operations of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat that allowed applicants to apply for scholarships online, the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat has begun payment for the academic user tuition fees for successful applicants.
According to a release signed by the Registrar of the Secretariat, Mr Kingsley Agyemang, “the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat has commenced payments for the 2020/2021 academic year award scheme.”
Batches
Mr Agyemang disclosed further that the payment of the fees will be done in batches, stressing that the Secretariat has already started payment for the Ledzekuku, Aowin, Sene East, Sekyere Afram Plains, Wassa East, Sefwi Wiawso and Ekumfi district assemblies.
“The Secretariat will contact respective MMDAs as soon as payments are effected for onward communication to beneficiary students,” he added.
Interview
It can be recalled that the district-level scholarship interview sessions began simultaneously across the country as part of efforts to select qualified tertiary students in both public and private institutions.
In all, about 75,000 students, who applied online for the scholarship and underwent an online aptitude test were interviewed at their preferred Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across the country.
A panel of seven members comprising a representative each of the District Chief Executive, a Chief, a tertiary institution, District Directorate of Education, the Member of Parliament of the area, and two persons from the Scholarship Secretariat, undertook the exercise.
Allocation
Government has allocated GHC80,000,000 to cater for the academic user facility fees of all successful applicants, which covered certificate cases, diplomas, undergraduate, and graduate programmes.
The exercise was the third phase of the local tertiary scholarship decentralisation initiative introduced by the government to ensure affordability, whilst increasing access to tertiary education.
It is also to make sure that more people have access to tertiary education
