In a move to address the long-standing issue of unpaid nursing trainee allowances, Vice
President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has announced the release of GH¢177 million to the
Ministry of Health.
Speaking at a meeting with nurses and midwives in Accra, Dr. Bawumia stated that the funds
will be transferred to the Ministry of Health on Thursday, and the ministry has been instructed to
swiftly disburse the money to the accounts of nursing trainees across the country.
The nursing trainee allowance, which was previously abolished by the Mahama administration,
was reintroduced by the Akufo-Addo administration.
However, the allowances have been in arrears for several months, causing concerns among the
affected trainees.
“This Thursday, the Controller is transferring GH¢177 million to the Ministry of Health to pay
the nursing training allowances. So I have also alerted Dr. Okoe-Boye to be on standby when the
money hits the Ministry of Health account, they should move it quickly to the accounts of the
nursing trainees so that they will have their alawa. It will drop,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
This announcement comes as a relief to nursing trainees who have been waiting for the release of
these overdue allowances.
The prompt payment of these allowances is expected to ease the financial burden on the trainees
and ensure the smooth continuation of their studies.
