Businessman Ibrahim Mahama has categorically denied allegations that he is seeking to acquire the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO), describing reports suggesting he intends to take over the state-owned company as false and misleading.
In a statement issued by his Special Aide, Rafik Mahama, last Monday, the businessman said he had neither expressed interest in acquiring VALCO nor made any offer to purchase the company.
“The attention of Mr Ibrahim Mahama has been brought to a demonstration held by the Labour Union of VALCO, during which some demonstrators alleged that he is interested in acquiring VALCO. Mr Ibrahim Mahama has no such interest and has not made any such offer to acquire VALCO. Mr Ibrahim Mahama has no such interest and has not made any such offer to acquire VALCO,” the statement said.
The statement described the allegations as another attempt to tarnish Mr Mahama’s reputation, insisting they formed part of a pattern of efforts aimed at damaging his public image.
According to Rafik Mahama, the accusations are “the latest in several vile attempts to impugn the integrity of Mr Ibrahim Mahama and subject him to needless public engagements.”
The statement further defended the businessman’s record, arguing that companies in which he has interests have consistently operated successfully across Africa while complying with all applicable laws.
It noted that all businesses associated with Mr Mahama were either legally established or lawfully acquired and continue to operate within the framework of Ghana’s laws.
The statement added that the longevity of his businesses, which have remained operational through seven election cycles, demonstrates their resilience and adherence to legal and corporate standards.
Mr Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to contributing to Ghana’s economic growth through investments both within the country and across the continent.
“He is committed to contributing his quota to the development of Ghana by investing in business opportunities in Ghana and beyond,” the statement said.
The businessman has also instructed his lawyers to initiate legal proceedings against those responsible for publishing or circulating the allegations.
The statement warned that appropriate legal action would be taken to protect Mr Mahama’s reputation from what it described as false and defamatory claims.
His office urged members of the public and the media to disregard the reports and to seek clarification through the undersigned on any issues relating to the matter.
The denial follows a demonstration by the Labour Union of VALCO during which some protesters allegedly claimed that Mr Mahama was interested in purchasing the company.
