The Akwashong of Joma and some landguardsin the Ga West Municipality in the Greater Accra Region, have been accused of cutting trees on the Buffer Zones around the Weija Dam.
This is happening at a time that government has initiated moves to plant trees on the Joma forest reserves to beautify the Weija Dam. The chiefs who are supposed to contribute towards the success of the projectare ratherengaged cutting and destroying the trees.
It has been noted with worry that the actions by the chief have gone a long way to have negative effect on the Weija Dam which serves as the major source of water for the people of Greater Accra.
The actions of the chief and his people are destring the effort of government in its quest to fight climate change and protect the environment under the green Ghana project.
Whilst the Government seeks to plant more trees to achieved its main aim and objectives, the Chiefs have been accused of destroying the already planted trees.
The actions of these people which started long ago seems not to have bothered authorities in the area as nobody seems concerned.
A concerned Citizen described their activities as against the law of the country and should be dealt with.
He also alleged that the actions by the traditional leaders was just to illegally sell the lands for their individual interests.
“They have illegally been involving in the act was due to the fact that their forefathers were not compensated for their acquired lands by the Government a d believed the best way is to compulsory take over the land” he stated.
The Concern Citizen further disclosed that the land was compulsory acquired and paid for years ago.
He therefore accused the Chief of selling the land to innocent buyers knowing the land cannot be register with Ei on it.
He underscored the need for the ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Forestry Commission, Ministry of Works and Housing and Ghana Water Company Limited to ensure that the criminal activities were halted.
