The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame has affirmed the prosecutorial independence of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in fighting corruption in Ghana.
This came to light at the just ended Conference of State Parties to the United Nation Convention Against Corruption held in Atlanta, Georgia from 11th to 15th December, 2023.
According to him, Ghana has passed the “Special Prosecutor Act to investigate and prosecute corruption, bribery and related criminal cases, and such office is independent of the powers of the Attorney-General in the area of corruption and corruption related offences.”
“Transparency, indeed, banishes corruption, thus recognizing that the haven for economic crimes is an atmosphere inducive to its concealment, and that access to information is a vital tool in the elimination of corruption”, he added.
The OSP was established pursuant to Article 36 of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) which requires states signatory to the UNCAC to set up independent law enforcement agency to fight corruption.
