Executive Director of EduWatch, Kofi Asare said nothing strange has happened to Ghana’s education system hence rallies parents to send their wards to school.
Making some analysis of second cycle schools re-opening, Kofi Asare said, during the last academic year, School placement was announced on 15th February 2023 and by that day 15th February, 2023, only 69% of qualified candidates had been placed.
Reporting date, during that academic year was announced as 20th February and students had only 5 days to prepare for school, including a maximum of 31% self-placement.
Parliament, he stated, did not raise an issue.
However, this academic year, School placement was announced on 27th November 2023 and by that day 27th November, 2023, over 80% of qualified candidates had already been placed and Reporting date for freshmen was announced as 4th December.
According to him, students have seven (7) days to prepare for school, including a maximum of 19% self-placement.
Compared, this year to last academic year, he asked whether Ghana Education Service is improving or otherwise?
According to him, nothing strange happened this academic year, stressing that while there is room for improvement, including the possibility of reducing the 90-day turnaround time for BECE results, “I believe nothing strange has happened. Once we re-set the academic year to pre-COVID, parents, students, teachers should have the needed time to prepare and rest. I am ready for school…let’s go,” he stated.
