Faction of members of the Staff Union of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) who have launched a recent attack on their Managing Director (MD) and calling for his dismissal are doing so over mere hatred and the chance to ‘chop’.
At a joint National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Friday, 9 April 2021, the junior and senior staff unions claimed Mr. Agyeman-Budu has failed at steering the affairs of the company in the almost two years that he has been in office.
But, this paper’s checks have revealed that contrary to claims of failure on the part of the MD, he has been able to hold-up the company during the difficult financial times in the COVID pandemic when the company’s finances were very bad.
Speaking to some staff, they indicated that there was never a month that they didn’t get paid or their payment delayed; they also averred that the Company under Mr. Agyeman-Budu always scrutinizes contracts to get value for money.
From underground investigations, it is obvious that the attackers are just being manipulated to disgrace the MD and create an impression as though he is unfit for the position.
“It is just some few people in our company who want to have their selfish way,” a staff indicated.
According to the staff we spoke to, Mr. Agyeman-Budu is very “affable and hardworking.
“He embraces everyone. We the workers love him, if the few executives of the Union do not.”
According to them, but for Agyeman-Budu a lot of Ghanaians would have slept in darkness amidst the hardship brought on them by the COVID-19 pandemic because most of the workers mounted pressure on him to embark on mass disconnection to mobilize funds last year June.
This paper has also established that there have been some completed and critical ongoing projects under his leadership some of which include the Kasoa and Pokuase substations among others.
It however beats the other staff’s imagination for some few individuals to accuse the MD of wrongdoing for building a canteen for staff and not for himself.
“These people, do they want us to go about one mile to get food? So then what at all are they fighting for? Welfare of staff indeed!”
“The Union said that the MD has been bypassing structures, giving instructions and threatening artisans. If the MD gets a request for help calls the district officer for swift action, what wrong has he done by not calling the director before the director calls the district officer?, they asked.
According to checks, outsourcing ECG’s STL collection as advance payment of bills, is only a proposal that has been put forward by a company just like any other proposal brought to ECG from companies. The board hasn’t even sat on it yet.
It also emerged that the contract for substation that was cited by the Union as an infringement of procurement law because it is beyond the threshold of the MD, emerged to be a contract that needs the approval of the board of directors of the company.
Also, the indebtedness to ECG’s welfare funds is debt that he (MD) inherited.
