The women of Swedru Central Market have expressed profound gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for his commitment to fulfilling his campaign promise of constructing a 24-hour economy market at Agona Swedru in the Central Region.
According to the market women, the Agona West Municipal Assembly has announced the commencement of the proposed construction, an indication to the President’s dedication to boosting trading activities in the area.
Esther Sekyi, a representative of the assembly women, speaking to the Media, expressed delight at the development, noting that the Assembly had assured them of the release of funds for the project.
She highlighted that the old Central Market would be transformed into an ultra-modern facility, complete with a school, fire station, police post, and other amenities to ensure the smooth operation of the 24-hour market.
Sekyi, however, appealed to the Assembly to reconsider its decision to have its staff register the market women, suggesting that the market queens be allowed to undertake the registration exercise to prevent confusion and infiltration.
“We know every woman who trades at the central market,” she emphasized.
Comfort Adams, leader of the Swedru Central Market, echoed Sekyi’s sentiments, urging the Assembly to entrust the market queens with the registration process to maintain peace and order. Adams also expressed concern about the influx of traders from nearby towns, who sell various items, including foodstuffs, at the Swedru Main Lorry Park without paying market tolls to the Assembly. She called on the Agona West Municipal Assembly to take decisive action to address the situation and prevent potential disturbances at the market.
