A shocking revelation has emerged regarding the recent Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) election at the Ahafo Ano North Municipal Assembly. According to a letter dated May 19, 2025, and referenced AANMA.01/80/01, 19 Assembly Members with voting rights wrote to inform the Assembly of their decision to absent themselves from a special meeting scheduled for May 20, 2025.
The reason for their absence was due to security concerns following a violent incident at the previous meeting, where some Assembly Members were physically attacked by thugs. Despite their absence, the NDC-led assembly, headed by Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, and the Regional Executive of the NDC allegedly Declared Elikpli Akapko as Presiding Member with 42 votes.
However, this declaration raises serious questions about the legitimacy of the election process. According to the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), a Presiding Member requires 39 votes to be elected. With 19 Assembly Members absent, only 37 Members with voting rights would be present, making it impossible to achieve the required number of votes.
The allegations of election fraud are further supported by the letter, which clearly states that the 19 absent Assembly Members would have left only 37 Members with voting rights. It is therefore unclear how could have received 42 votes.
The people of Ahafo Ano North Municipality deserve transparency and accountability in their governance. The alleged election fraud must be thoroughly investigated, and those responsible
