Youth Raise Concerns About Galamsey Activities At Kyekyebiase

The Concerned youth group of Kyekyebiase in  Asante Akim Central of the Ashanti Region has called on  His Royal Highness Otumfour Osei Tutu II to as a matter of urgency intervene and halt the ongoing illegal mining  activities  happening in the area

They claim that indiscriminate galamsey activities currently taking place in the community are happening in the glare of opinion leaders and government authorities.

Kyekyebiase is a farming community that  is noted for producing adequate farm produce to feed the  entire community but the illegal mining  activities are said to be destroying  the cocoa farms and  crop farms .

According to residents in the town and the surrounding communities, the  galamsey activities are seriously destroying river bodies  and forest reserves to the detriment of  the health of the residents.

Communities like  Kyekyebiase, Aboabo, Menna, Akodeasua, Afeneasua and Dunsin have been serious;y affected by the galamsey activities .

The concerned youth further blamed   some land owners in the area for contributing  to the conduct of the illegal mining activities in exchange for bread and butter.

The group further  accused the MCE of authorizing  the illicit mining activities According to them the  Municipal Chief Executive  lied that,  his office would conduct  prospecting  activities before giving permits to responsible mining however, while waiting for his prospecting activities  excavators and other mining machines had been  sent to the site to do mining.

The group was however quick to state that, when a follow up interview with the MCE, Hon. Robert Yaw Kwarkye was conducted, he averred that the only mining company that approached him was Kobra Mining Company with a prospecting mining license apart.
