Mrs. Yang Yang, the Chief Executive of Zonda Tec Ghana Limited and Sinotruk, a known Chinese company that runs transport and logistics, and heavy-duty vehicles, was yesterday sentenced to a fine of GHC24,000, by the Tema High Court for contempt.
In default, Yang Yang would make time in jail.
The Court, presided over by Justice Patricia Quansah, also fine the legal representative of Zonda Sinotruck to 10 penalty units, equivalent to GHC12,000- Ghana cedis, in default of which he would also be sent to jail.
Lawyer for the party that cited Mrs. Yang Yang and her legal representation for contempt of court, Archie Martin Danso Jnr. told journalists at the court premises after the court sentenced the two that, for the judge to convict a woman like Yang Yang means the laws are working and the judge is courageous to convict, “although we are not happy about other matters, we are happy the Ghana court is able to make this order.”
The story goes that while a case on breach of contract is pending the same Court, Zonda Sinotruck and Yang Yang, fully aware of the pendency of the suit against Narh Global Services, in gross disobedience and disregard the court, stormed Narh Global’s mine on 1st August, 2023, in the Ashanti region, with about 40 armed Soldiers from the 4th Battalion Infantry and 6 armed Police Officers with numerous Army and Police vehicles.
While there, they attacked the workers and also “handcuffed the mine manager to a stationary vehicle, ceased the mobile phones of all the workers at the mine, assaulted all the workers using the butt of their guns, spend the whole day-from 4am to about 3pm at the mines and prepared all the food stuffs meant for the workers and ate, siphon and stole 1,500 liters of diesel the company uses for its operations into their vehicles and the excavators, amongst others.”
It was for these conducts that Narh Global Services cited the two- Zonda Tec Ghana Limited and its legal officer- for contempt for which they were sentenced yesterday after they had earlier been convicted.
Meanwhile, back to the main case, Narh Global Services, entered an appearance in the suit by Zonda Sinotruck over a business deal and has also filed a motion to strike out the statement of claim and dismiss the suit, which motion was heard and dismissed by the court.
Subsequently, a motion for extension of time within which to file a statement of defence was filed on behalf of Narh Global Services, which case is pending before the court.
