About 50 market queens from various cities in Ghana have paid and picked nomination forms for Alan Kyerematen, one of the Presidential aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The women who stormed the NPP headquarters yesterday, picked up the forms in support of their candidate.
The voluntary group which calls itself “Queens,” is at the forefront of canvassing and mobilizing grassroot support for Trade Minister Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen.
According to the women, their presence at the party’s headquarters is in response to the concerns of the Kumasi Central Market women.
According to Comfort Serwaa, leader of Kumasi Tomato sellers union, who led the Queens, although the market women are not certain on who becomes the next leader for the NPP, they wholeheartedly stand with Queens and support the candidate the voluntary group is canvassing support for thus Hon. Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen.
She added that, all the market women have expressed their readiness and were willing to raise funds for the honourable minister when the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party finally opens up for nominations because they believe Hon. Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen understands the market women and appreciate their industry better with his years of experience at the ministry.
“So, our presence here today is to honour that,” she said.
They extended appreciation to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the free senior high school policy and juxtaposed that to how market women are able to save the fees of their wards for other profitable ventures.
The NPP will elect its flagbearer for the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections in November and so far 11 aspirants have declared their intention to contest for the position.
However, since Friday, May 26 when nominations opened, seven persons have so far picked the nomination forms which cost GH¢50,000.
These include Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, a former Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko, a former General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a former MP for Mampong, Francis Addai-Nimoh, a former Agriculture Minister, Dr Owusu Afryie Akoto, Energy Analyst, Kwadwo Poku.
