Amb Smail Chergui, the AU Commissioner for Peace and Security has described Ghana as a beacon of stability and democracy where government policies exerts confidence in the socio-economic space of the country.
Amb Smail Chergui made this remarks when he met President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to present the outcome from the joint work the AU Commission for peace and security done with Ghana in the Vulnerability and Resilience Assessment.
According to him, Ghana is the first country to achieve and respond to the request for the Assessment and has successfully present its report showing how resilient its leadership is to the growth of the country and its people.
He averred that the Commission has identified in its report the progress maybe by Ghana in the area of gender equality through the appointment of more women in key government positions.
Amb Smail Chergui also said there have been progress in how Ghana adapts to climate change.
“We have also observed that in the area of security, Ghana is doing well….. You can count on us to extend our cooperation and partnership in other areas,” he said.
The President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo expressed gratitude to AU and the AU Commissioner for the support saying that Ghana attaches great importance to AU hence successive government have clinched to the Pan African agenda.
He said he was happy to hear that Ghana is the first to offer itself to the agenda of peace and security and said peace and stability are important and non-negotiable for any country that wants to develop.
President Akufo-Addo again commended the AU for establishing mechanisms for various countries to ascribe to and ensure steady progress and described the move as a good one and “in the right direction.”
He also thanked the AU for offering the needed technical assistance to Ghana to be able to reach this far and said Ghana is ready to cooperate with the AU in other areas of benefit.
