A member of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has died following a road accident involving the team’s vehicle on Wednesday night.
Four other officers sustained serious injuries and were first treated at the Obuasi Government Hospital before being transferred to the Anglogold Obuasi Hospital for further care.
The team was returning from an operation at a disputed mining concession in Anyankyerim — an area recently taken over by illegal miners — when their vehicle reportedly somersaulted along the stretch between the Anyankyerim community and Airport Road.
The concession, owned by Mining and Construction Services Limited, has become the centre of controversy after some illegal miners claimed it had been allocated to them by a previous NDC administration.
Reliable sources suggest or alleges that some influential political figures are backing the miners. The NDC Obuasi West Constituency Vice Chairman, Alhaji Zamba, is said to have publicly asserted ownership of the concession in a video circulating on social media
