Time seem to be eluding embattled Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, after entangling himself with another weird and baseless allegation against the enviable Ghana Legal Council, calling it a group of “dishonest” lawyers.
Last Thursday, as part of frantic efforts to salvage what is left of his dwindling image in society, Hon. Agyapong took the GLC to the cleaners in sheer disrespect and disdain when he retorted that “And Okudzato or whoever (referring to the Chairman of the disciplinary committee of the GLC) was defending him, (referring to Anas),” adding that, “We have dishonest lawyers in this country, it’s amazing, very, very dishonest lawyers”.
Hon. Agyapong who has been jumping from one media house to the other, seeking to clear his heavily dented name from the barbaric assassination of a member of the revered undercover investigative team, Tiger Eye PI, Ahmed Husseine-Suale, has once again bitten more than he can chew for descending on the General Legal Council, thereby incurring the displeasure of the recognized legal institution.
Loud as he has always been, the MP has been hauled before the privileges committee of the august house of Parliament for the second time to answer for his role in the shooting and killing of Ahmed, which according to the Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Asawase, Muntaka Mubarak, amounts to contempt of the House of Representatives.
The disgruntled Hon. Agyapong’s attacks comes in the wake mounting controversies that engulfed the killing of Ahmed Hussein-Suale for which many are pointing accusing fingers at him, considering he had, in the wake the premiering of Tiger Eye’s investigative project into corruption in Football, ‘Number 12’ called for Ahmed to be attacked.
Before his death, Ahmed is reported to have received several threatening messages from unknown persons after the MP splashed his pictures on TV and social media, calling on the public to attack him anytime they saw him and he would take the responsibilities thereafter.
Months after showing the images of Ahmed, the undercover investigative journalist was last Wednesday shot and killed at Madina where he lived. With guilt boldly cemented on his mind, Hon. Agyapong has been galloping from one media house to the other in vain attempts at proving his innocence much to the chagrin of many who have intensified calls for his immediate arrest and interrogation and possible prosecution if found culpable.
He is justifiably levied to the core after the hardworking Tiger Eye PI team reproduced his video interview in which he called for Ahmed to be attacked and hurt. So shattered so that he has, at the least opportunity attacked the head of the Tiger Eye PI team, world acclaimed and most controversial undercover journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas. “I wanted to beat him up at the General Legal Council”.
(Referring to Anas ) when they last met at the GLC. It would be recalled that drama and tension filled, GLC when Hon. Agyapong, told the distinguished panel members that he did not fear Anas and that he would remove the undercover journalist’s mask when both parties left the GLC building. The panel didn’t mince words when they told him point-blank that if he ever dared touched Anas or any of the members of his team, they would have him arrested, charged and prosecuted for assault.
Mr. Agyapong’s outbursts stemmed from his stance that the panel did not show respect to him. But the panel, made up of distinguished Supreme Court Judges, Retired Supreme Court Judges as well as senior members of the legal profession did not kowtow his ranting.
The GLC dismissed the complaint filed by the MP against the ace undercover investigative journalist as it declined jurisdiction in the complaint of professional misconduct brought against Anas on the grounds that, Anas was not a lawyer at the time the alleged incident happened. The GLC therefore directed the MP to report Anas to the police if he felt Anas was corrupt.
According to the GLC, Anas was neither the police nor the Attorney-General to terminate a trial. It would be recalled that the MP, in July 2018, dragged the undercover journalist to the GLC, claiming that Anas misconducted himself professionally as a lawyer in a manner that bordered on “moral turpitude.”
The complaint letter dated July 5, 2018, and addressed to the Chairperson of the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Counsel, asked that disciplinary action be taken against Anas as a lawyer. According to the MP, Anas and a Chief State Attorney, Ms Ellen Kwawukume, connived to cause a fraud case to be dismissed.
He also alleged that Anas’ style of investigations, which he described as ‘entrapping people’, should not be countenanced. This is not the first time Anas has bloodied the MP. Anas, for his part, has dragged Mr. Agyapong to court for defaming him and is asking the High Court to award aggravated damages to the tune of GH¢25 million arising from defamatory materials published by the MP.
The Executive Director of The Press Foundation, TPF, and International Freelance Journalist, Listowell Yesu Bukarson, has been granted the lawful attorney to stand in for Anas.
