President John Dramani Mahama has called on the United States to confront what he describes as the troubling levels of gun violence in American society, arguing that easy access to firearms remains a major challenge to public safety.

The President’s comments follow the deaths of two Ghanaians in New York, which have brought renewed attention to the safety of Ghanaian nationals living in the United States.

Speaking during a meet-the-press engagement at Jubilee House on Thursday, November 5, President Mahama cited the killing of 15-year-old Javits Frimpong in the Bronx and the discovery of the body of 24-year-old Joseph Owusu, a 24-year-old Ghanaian caregiver who had been missing for two weeks.

While acknowledging that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths were ongoing, the President said the incidents had raised broader questions about America’s relationship with firearms, violence and mental health.

On the killing of young Frimpong, reports had suggested that bullying could have been a contributing factor, although the New York Police Department (NYPD) was yet to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

President Mahama, however, argued that beyond the individual circumstances of the tragedy, the broader problem of gun violence in American society required serious attention.

He pointed to the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution, which protects the right to keep and bear arms, noting that the constitutional provision has contributed to the widespread availability of firearms.

According to him, the ease with which individuals can acquire guns presents a significant public safety challenge, particularly in a society grappling with multiple social pressures.

The President also drew attention to mental health, describing it as an emerging crisis in modern society.

He cautioned that psychological distress is not always outwardly visible, warning that individuals experiencing serious personal or emotional difficulties may appear perfectly composed to those around them.

He suggested that the combination of mounting social pressures, mental health challenges and access to firearms creates concerns that American authorities cannot afford to ignore.

The President maintained that gun violence was among the critical issues the United States needed to confront, particularly as communities continue to grapple with the consequences of shootings and other violent incidents.

The deaths of Frimpong and Owusu have consequently brought the welfare and protection of Ghanaians living abroad into renewed focus, with questions surrounding their circumstances expected to remain of interest as investigations continue.
