The absence of chairs has compelled Nursery school pupils at Abenabo a suburb in the Suhum Municipality of the Eastern Region to carry their parent’s kitchen stools to school before they can sit and learn, The New Crusading GUIDE can report.
Some of the kids between the ages of four (4) and seven (7) absent themselves from school whenever the kitchen stools are to be used by their parents at home.
Even though the school is thought to be one of the oldest within the municipality, it does not even have a single chair for the kids to make learning enjoyable.
In an interview with one of the minors in the presence of their parents, one of the Nursery pupils, (name withheld) expressed worry about the situation in the community.
She said, “Learning in school is not fun at all because there are not enough good chairs and desks for learning. We have to bring our parents’ kitchen stools to school every day, and we have to bring them back when school is over. What’s funny is that our parents use the same chairs in the kitchen at home to do their housework.”
The Odikro of the Abenabo Community, Nene Narteh Akrota II, lamented that “We have asked the authorities several times to help us solve the problem, but to no avail.”
“The MP for Suhum, Oboafo Kwadwo Asante, and the Suhum Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Margaret Darko, don’t seem to care at all, even though they’ve been asked to help several times,” added.
Nene Akrotia II asked the Ghana Education Service (GES), the MP for the Suhum Constituency, the Suhum MCE, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO’s), and individuals to come to the aid of the school.
