Some youths of Nzema in the Western Region have called on the President to appoint an Nzema as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC) at Atuabo in the Ellembelle district in the region.
The youth calling themselves ‘Nzema Youth Parliament’ stressed that now that President John Mahama has begun the appointment of state officials to administer affairs of the country, they expected that the Ghana Gas CEO position will be given to an Nzema.
They youth noted that appointing someone from the Nzema enclave to man the Gas Company, would be a blessing more than a curse to the people of Nzema.
The leader of the group, Mr Jonas Kabutey in an interview in the Nzema East Municipality
He said the appointment of an indigene from Nzema to exercise an oversight responsibility over the gas processing plant would give cognizance to the local content policy.
“This will also afford people within the oil and gas enclave with the requisite qualification, to take advantage and get employment in the company”, he added.
He said though Ghana Gas is a national asset, it needed someone who will ensure that people within the enclave were not worse off.
He explained that most of the residents’ livelihoods had been taken away by activities of the oil and gas in the area.
Mr Kabutey said environmental hazards emanating from oil and gas activities also stirred the face of the people.
He called on President Mahama to heed to the petition of the youth and the traditional leaders in the Nzema area by appointing a distinguished individual from Nzema to man the operations at Ghana gas.
This, he indicated, would ensure peace and harmony at the company and to avoid any disturbances by youth groups in the Nzema enclave
