About forty (40) armed soldiers from the 4th Battalion Infantry in Kumasi, and six (6) armed police officers, in gross disregard to court processes ongoing, have ransacked a mining company-Narh Global Services Limited at Pekyi New Site, in the Ashanti Region.
During the attacks, the soldiers and police officers allegedly cuffed the mine manager to a stationary vehicle, assaulted the workers with the butt of their guns, siphoned and stoled 1,500 litres of diesel, ceased the mobile phones of all the workers at the mine and, prepared and ate all the food meant for workers at the site.
As a result, their superiors, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Commander Rear, 4th Battalion Infantry Brigade, the Inspector General of Police, and the company at whose behest the soldiers attacked the mine-Zonda Sinotruck Assembly Plant Limited-have been hauled to court to answer for the crimes of their men.
Narh Global Services Limited is therefore praying the court to convict Zonda Sinotruck Assembly Plant Limited, one Yang Yang, and the top brass of the military and police for “contempt of court and punish them appropriately and also restrain them from further access to the subject matter until the final determination of the suit.”
Court documents, dated 16 August this year, and deposed by the CEO of Narh Global, George Narh, including pictures from the site, in the possession of this paper, show a trail of when the Excavators were moved from the mine to Zonda’s yard.
Narh Global Services, the court documents say, entered an appearance in an earlier suit by Zonda Sinotruck over a business deal and has also filed a motion to strike out the statement of claim and dismiss the suit, which motion was heard and dismissed by the court.
Subsequently, a motion for extension of time within which to file a statement of defence was filed on behalf of Narh Global Services, which case is pending before the court.
However, Narh Global (Applicant) stated that “The 1st (Zonda Sinotruck) and 2nd (Yang Yang) Respondents being fully aware of the pendency of this suit in which the 1st Respondent is the Plaintiff, in gross disobedience.
and disregard this court, on 1st August, 2023 went to the Applicant’s mine with about 40 armed Soldiers from the 4th Battalion Infantry and 6 armed Police Officers under the command of the 6th Respondent with numerous Army and Police vehicles attacked the workers and also engaged in the enlisted conduct:
The said Soldiers and Police Officers handcuffed the Mine
Manager on to a stationary vehicle,
Ceased the mobile phones of all the workers at the mine,
Assaulted all the workers using the butt of their guns,
Spend the whole day at the mines and prepared all the food stuffs meant for the workers and ate,
Siphon and stole 1,500 liters of diesel the Applicant’s uses for its operations into their vehicles and the excavators, amongst others.”
