The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) will today Monday witness the investiture of Rev. Father Prof. Afful Broni as the first Catholic Priest to be sworn in as Vice Chancellor of the university.
Prof. Afful-Broni was appointed substantive Vice-Chancellor on August 31.
This was after five principal officers of the institution were dismissed, including then Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mawutor Avoke.
Prior to the dismissal, a Winneba High Court in 2017 ordered Professor Mawutor Avoke, to step aside until a case brought against him and the University’s Governing Council was determined.
The order was made in a case brought before the court by one Supi Kofi Kwayera, who insisted that the Vice Chancellor and the Finance Officer were operating under the institution’s defunct governing council.
Following his appointment as Vice Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba, Reverend Father Professor A. Afful-Broni, has received a goodwill message from the Vice Chancellors of Public Universities congratulating him for his appointment.
The body reminded him of the high expectations required of him and entreated him to uphold same
“You are no doubt unaware of the challenges that the University has gone through in recent times. You thus, have a daunting task ahead since expectations are high. This definitely should translate into the quality of relationships as well as the nature of teaching, learning and research that will be carried out by faculty and students in the University”, part of the letter read.
Meanwhile, Dr Ahmed Jinapor, Senior Lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba has urged his colleagues to rally behind the newly appointed Vice Chancellor.
He said political polarization has torn the school apart and it is time to build bridges. He also urged all those who have issues with the Governing Council to explore dialogue rather than court.
Dr Ahmed Jinapor also called on the MP to lobby government to invest a lot more in teaching facilities to absorb the first batch of free SHS graduates.
In another statement, Dr Samuel Atintonu also congratulated Prof. Afful Broni and pleaded that the new VC should let by gone be by gone and see all of them as his children.
He also advised his colleagues to desist from media attacks on the new VC and the Governing Council.
