Tebibiamin Manste, Nii Ayittey Ansah and the Stool Mother of Ashifla, Naa Ayele have been convicted by the Amasaman High Court for contempt of court, following allegations of scandalizing the judiciary. The court sentenced both parties to serve seven (7) days in Nsawam Prison and imposed a fine of 30,000 Ghana Cedis.
The conviction stemmed from comments made by Ansah and Ayele, which the court deemed disrespectful and damaging to the integrity of the judicial system. The remarks were made during a public gathering and subsequently circulated in various media outlets, leading to widespread concerns about their impact on public perception of the court.
In addition to the prison time and fine, the court ordered the duo to publish a formal retraction of their statements in a national daily newspaper to ensure that the public is made aware of their remorse and the consequences of their actions.
The ruling has sparked discussions across the community regarding the boundaries of free speech and the accountability of individuals in positions of influence. Others were of the opinion that the case serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting the judicial process and the potential repercussions of public statements.
In a related development, the Chief of Armaman Nii Amakwafio, the traditional leader who initiated contempt charges against the two individuals in his community, expressed his appreciation for the adherence to the rule of law throughout the legal proceedings.
Speaking to reporters, Nii Amakwafio emphasized the importance of maintaining order and respect for legal processes in the community. “The rule of law is the backbone of a just society. It is reassuring to see our legal system functioning effectively,” he stated.
The contempt charges were brought against the two individuals for allegedly undermining the authority of the chief and the community’s traditional governance structures.
Nii concluded, “We must all strive to follow the law and respect our institutions, ensuring peace and harmony within our community.”
