The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, and the Ga Traditional Council have called for unified national efforts to address the recurring flooding challenges in Accra, describing the situation as both an environmental and civic responsibility requiring collective action.
In a press statement issued in Accra, the Council expressed sympathy to families, traders, motorists and communities affected by recent heavy rains that caused flooding across parts of the capital.
The Council commended government agencies, including the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, NADMO, Metropolitan Assemblies and security services for their continued efforts to manage the impact of floods and restore normalcy.
It stressed that flooding in Accra goes beyond engineering concerns, noting that issues such as poor sanitation, unlawful construction on waterways, and weak environmental discipline continue to worsen the situation.
According to the statement, sustainable flood management requires strict enforcement of land-use regulations, improved sanitation practices, protection of natural drainage systems, and stronger public education on environmental responsibility.
The Ga Traditional Council also called for closer collaboration between government institutions, traditional authorities, faith-based organisations, community leaders, youth groups and residents to implement lasting solutions.
It further pledged support for initiatives aimed at improving drainage systems, preventing encroachment on waterways, and promoting community-led sanitation efforts.
The Council emphasized that addressing Accra’s flooding requires shared responsibility, discipline and long-term planning to protect lives, property and the environment.
