Fresh information gathered indicates that the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) is still engaged in discussions with Dzata Aviation, a company associated with Ghanaian businessman Ibrahim Mahama, over the future of the private jet terminal at Terminal 1 of the Kotoka International Airport.
The development follows reports suggesting that the Fixed Base Operator (FBO) facility previously operated by McDan Aviation could be reassigned to Ibrahim Mahama’s Dzata Aviation.
Although reports of a possible takeover by Dzata Aviation generated public interest, Ibrahim Mahama has denied claims that he has taken over or is set to take over the facility.
However, sources familiar with the matter have disclosed that discussions between GACL, Dzata Aviation and Ibrahim Mahama are ongoing, with engagements reportedly focused on a possible arrangement that could see the terminal formally transferred to Dzata Aviation.
The private jet terminal, which was operated by McDan Aviation under Executive Chairman Daniel McKorley, was established as a premium aviation facility providing specialised services for private aircraft, including VIP passenger handling, crew support, flight planning, conference facilities and luxury travel services.
The facility was taken over by GACL after McDan Aviation’s operations were suspended, but questions have since emerged over why the company has not been allowed to resume operations despite the passage of time.
Some industry observers and members of the public are asking why the terminal remains unavailable to McDan Aviation while discussions are reportedly progressing with another private operator.
The uncertainty has fueled debate over transparency, fairness and the process being used in determining the next operator of the facility.
Sources say GACL is continuing engagements with stakeholders as it seeks a long-term arrangement for the management of the terminal, which remains one of Ghana’s key facilities for executive and private aviation services.
The renewed attention comes amid Ibrahim Mahama’s growing interest in the aviation sector, following reports of his acquisition of a Bombardier Global 6500 private jet, an ultra-long-range aircraft designed for high-end corporate travel.
Meanwhile, stakeholders are awaiting official communication from GACL on the outcome of the discussions and the criteria that will guide any final decision regarding the future of the Terminal 1 private jet facility.
