In a demonstration of swift and decisive action, Ghana’s security apparatus showcased its readiness and effectiveness in countering a menacing threat in Garu, situated in the Upper East Region. This strategic response followed the distressing incident that transpired on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, when a group of irate youth armed with AK-47 rifles, machetes, and other weapons besieged a team of intelligence operatives deployed by the Ministry of National Security for a critical counter-terrorism operation.
The situation rapidly escalated into a violent attack as the armed group opened fire on the officers, who had properly introduced themselves as security operatives, compelling them to seek refuge within their vehicle and, subsequently, at the Garu Police Station. The assailants persistently pursued, encircling the station and intensifying their assault. The timely intervention by the Ghana Armed Forces became crucial, facilitating the safe evacuation of the imperilled National Security personnel.
This attack is part of a series of assaults against state security that have afflicted the nation since the start of the year. Notably, on January 23, a police constable, Regina Angenu, was shot dead at Habitat Gigande. Additionally, in April 2023, an immigration officer was shot dead at the Bawku Municipal Assembly, while a police escort was attacked at Gbewa College of Education in Pusiga in September 2023. The Garu incident, therefore, stands as a stark reminder of the necessity for decisive actions to avert such scourges. The government owes it as a duty to safeguard the lives of security personnel committed to defending the people and the territorial integrity of Ghana.
Accordingly, the Ministry of National Security, coordinating with the Ghana Armed Forces, orchestrated a joint special operation on Saturday, October 28, 2023, in Garu. The primary objectives were to retrieve the weapons used in the attack and to apprehend those responsible for the violent assault on the security operatives. The meticulously executed operation proved highly successful as the threats in Garu were effectively neutralised. The perpetrators responsible for the aggression were captured, and the weapons used in the attack were retrieved. Through these decisive actions, peace has been successfully restored to the area.
According to sources at the Ministry, the security apparatus recognises the gravity of the youth group’s assault and unequivocally condemns any acts intended to intimidate or inflict harm on officials of Security and Intelligence Agencies. Such actions significantly hinder the agencies’ pivotal role in ensuring the peace and stability of Ghana. The sources strongly denounced deliberate acts that jeopardise the lives of security personnel while reiterating the Ministry’s dedication to fostering citizen involvement in upholding national peace and stability.
The joint operation is a testament to Ghana’s robust security architecture, highlighting its rapid responsiveness and steadfast dedication to preserving stability. It also serves as an assurance from the government that stringent measures will be implemented to ensure the safety of security personnel and the populace while maintaining the rule of law. Although investigations into the incident are ongoing, the Ministry of National Security appears resolute in its determination to safeguard the nation against security threats in the future.
