The President of the Ghana Olympic Committee Ben Nunoo Mensah has claimed his outfit has no records of the team list Ghana presented at the 2014 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, Scotland under cross examination at an Accra Labour High Court.
The plaintiff in the case, a former Project officer of the GOC Erasmus Kwaw, avers his employment was unlawful terminated by the GOC to enable the defendant perpetrate an illegality in the media accreditation process for the 2018 Commonwealth Games which subsequently resulted in the infamous deportation of 60 fake journalists.
The Plaintiff also claims he was engaged as Press Attaché by the GOC for Glasgow 2014 and Gaborone 2014 but is yet to be remunerated for his services. Under cross examination, Mr. Mensah claimed emphatically his administration which took office on 15th March, 2017 inherited no records on the Games from the previous administration.
“There is always a list of contingents before we leave the shores of Ghana for the Games,” he told the court presided over by Justice Ananda Aikins but added later, “I don’t have any documentation on Glasgow 2014.” Counsel for plaintiff Nathaniel Hegbor informed the court he is mauling a subpoena to the defendant to produce the list for the Glasgow 2014 Games.
Mr. Mensah however admitted he was the Treasurer in the previous administration and even served as the Chef de Mission (CDM) for the Glasgow 2014 Games before resigning a few months before the Games. Asked how officers for Ghana’s teams are appointed for the Games, Mr. Mensah claimed he was not privy to how those appointments were made under the previous administration.
He insisted he could only speak to what pertains under the current GOC administration. But he admitted appointing a CDM team which worked with him while he was the Chef de Mission for the Glasgow Games in 2014.
Counsel for the plaintiff pointed out to the GOC capo he had breached the terms for abrogating the contract between the plaintiff and the GOC when he terminated the contract without giving a month’s notice or payment of a month’s salary.
The Defendant admitted the said termination letter was dated 24th August 2017 and became effective on 30th August 2017 but said the payment of the salary was predicated on plaintiff returning property in his possession. The court adjourned the case to 27th July to continue cross examination of the GOC President. The plaintiff Erasmus Kwaw has already taken his turn in the dock.
