The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to maintain the payment of Teacher and Nursing Allowance to help students pursue their academic programs without disruptions
The group strongly criticized President John Mahama and his National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for allegedly planning to cancel nursing and teacher trainee allowances.
In a press release issued on Monday (10 February 2025), the youth wing expressed outrage, describing the move as a betrayal of campaign promises made during the 2024 elections.
According to the statement, the NDC government’s action amounts to deception, as students voted for them based on these commitments.
The NPP youth wing demanded that the government uphold the allowances, arguing that teacher and nursing training institutions remain colleges rather than universities, making the government’s justification for cancellation invalid.
They also condemned media personality Kevin Taylor for allegedly insulting students, labeling his remarks as derogatory and unacceptable.
Calling for student protests, the NPP youth wing urged trainees to rise in defense of their dignity. The statement ended with a pledge to stand by the affected students, rejecting what it called political deception and bullying.
Signed by National Youth Organiser Salam Mustapha, the statement reaffirmed the NPP’s commitment to supporting students and holding the government accountable.
