Information gathered indicates that some Landguards in connection with some chiefs at Joma, in the Weija-Gbawe Municipality, are on rampage and destroying properties along the Weija Dam which serves as a source drinking water for the people of Accra.
The Vanguards have invaded the entire land acquired by government and continues to destroy the Weija Dam.
They have also used their powers and illegally sold major part of the land to people to build properties for their personal use which goes to affect the Dam.
These Landguards have flouted instructions by the authorities of the Forestry Commission (FC) and the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and continue to sell the lands to individuals for their personal gains.
A concern resident who failed to disclosed his identity to this reporter that the languards have been deployed from Bolgatanga , Navrongo as well as Burkina -Faso by the chiefs to attack people who seek to protect the River.
He further indicated that the land guards and these chiefs have been embarking on the illegal activities for their personal gains.
The Concern Citizen further alleged that the chiefs have connived with the police and bribed them with portion of lands to shield their illegal operations.
As a concern citizen we have complaint to authorities of the activities of these land guards but to no avail” he indicated.
Per an information, officials of the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly in July 2020 marked some properties for demolishing. These properties turned out to be owned by these fake Chiefs, the Assembly therefore ordered them to vacate the place but they failed to adhere to their order and went back to put up buildings at the place.
Further information had it that the former Minister for works and housing in the erstwhile former President John Agyekum Kuffuo’s regime, Mr. Kwamena Bartels, on 25th May 2001 held a meeting with stakeholders for the planting of trees on a distance 950 feet away from the dam for its protection and beautification.
For the protection of the Dam, one Ayi Mensah I, the Djasetse of Nii Boiman, planted neem tree seeds and cashew seedling and other medicinal plants but are all been destroyed by the land guards.
For the safety of the Dam, it has been noted that authorities of the GWCL and the Forestry Commission in 2001, handed 58 acres of land to Nii Ayi Mensah I, Dzasetse of Nii Boiman to plant trees starting from about 30 meters after the river boundary to do petty farming to help protect the plantation along the river.
One Moses Nsor and Isaac Ayi, who according to an alleged information are those behind the activities have ensured that all the planted trees were uprooted.
Further information had it that on the 11th day of July, 2020 some landguards, believed to have been sent by Mr. Nsor, invaded the site at Joma, destroyed properties worth several thousands of Ghana Cedis and nearly took the life of Nii Ayi Mensah I who had gone there to visit his farms.
Several complaints on the activities of the land according to information have been lodged to security officials and the Anyaa police but to no avail.
It would therefore be of great benefit of the country if the current government goes to the scene and deal with these land guards to ensure that the dam is protect.
