In a major crackdown on illicit financial activities, Ghana’s National Security has intercepted a large cache of US dollars and Ghana Cedis, including counterfeit notes, hidden inside twelve 20-foot shipping containers.
The operation, which took place in a warehouse in Sapeiman, located in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra region, was carried out following a crucial tip-off.
According to an official statement from the National Security, the seized currency was cleverly concealed, with stacks of US dollars hidden in wooden boxes filled with cement. Additionally, some of the discovered boxes, barricaded with plywood and sealed with charcoal, contained more bundles of foreign and local currency notes.
Investigators have confirmed that two containers from the suspected shipment are still unaccounted for, but state security trackers are actively pursuing their whereabouts.
Authorities have also launched a manhunt for four key suspects, including a ring leader known only as Alhaji.
In a shocking twist, the warehouse yielded even more incriminating discoveries. Officials uncovered boxes containing metals suspected to be gold bars, large quantities of counterfeit Ghana cedi notes in GH¢50 and GH¢100 denominations, and fake Ghana Army uniforms and boots, raising further security concerns.
National Security has assured the public that stringent measures are being taken to bring all perpetrators to justice and prevent such activities from undermining the country’s economic stability. Meanwhile, investigations continue to determine the full extent of the operation and its possible international links.
The bust marks one of the most significant operations in recent times, highlighting the growing sophistication of financial crimes and the urgent need for heightened vigilance and enforcement in the fight against counterfeiting and fraud.
