The Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen (GNAFF) on Tuesday, 22 July, 2025, officially sworn in their new president, Mr Michael Tetteh Kwetey, following a formal handover ceremony from outgoing President,  Nene Terkpertey Agblezie I.
Speaking during the program, the new President said his leadership is committed to protecting the interests of its members, who are farmers and fishermen across the country.
Mr Kwetey who described farmers and fisherfolk as heroes for feeding the nation and sustaining countless livelihoods, noted that, he and his new leadership will make sure that all government policies geared towards supporting members of the association will get to them no matter where they find themselves in the country.
“My leadership will make sure that whatever policy from the government geared towards supporting farmers and fishermen to increase productivity get to them no matter where they are located in the country. We will make sure premixed fuel and marine gasoline oil from the government to fishermen and women get to them. We will also make sure that fertilizer meant for farmers is delivered to them on time”, he noted.
He said the era of diverting premixed fuel or gasoline oil for the fisherfolk community and fertilizer for farmers will be a thing of the past under his leadership.
“I am sending a strong warning to those who used to divert things which were from the government to farmers and fishermen to help them in their labour to feed the nation without impunity to desist from such activities because we will make sure that the law catches up with them,” he cautioned.
Mr. Kwetey, a businessman noted that his leadership will not shy away from scrutinizing government policies and advocating for their welfare adding “GNAFF aims to ensure that government policies support the livelihoods of farmers and fishermen and contribute to the Ghanaian economy. We also plan to collaborate with the government to enhance productivity and address issues like food insecurity.
He mentioned that, though, the association is prepared to work with the government to improve productivity and livelihoods within the agricultural and fishing sectors, GNAFF under his leadership will actively review government policies and programs to ensure they align with the needs and interests of farmers and fishermen.
“We recognize the importance of food security and will advocate for policies that promote sustainable agricultural and fishing practices. Under my leadership, we will work to strengthen our contribution to the Ghanaian economy”, he mentioned.
Mr Kwetey said the association’s renewed life and strength was not only a testament to the resilience and strategic relevance of the association to the local economy, but also reinforced its role as the backbone of Ghana’s economy.
He added that no society could ever imagine a future without farmers, fishermen and women, saying “this very point underscores the transformative power inherent in our collective energies and resources”.
Mr Kwetey reiterated that his leadership would visit farmers and fishermen nationwide to further appreciate their working and living conditions, and how the association could collectively improve the conditions of farmers and its members.
Mr. Kwetey pledged to lead the Association with dedication, promising to build on the momentum of his election victory and the commitment shown by members.
“Together, we shall increase productivity and profit margins and contribute our greatest share to feed Ghana and her people,” he said, earning applause from the gathering of farmers, fisherfolk, and stakeholders.
Mr. Kwetey noted that his leadership would focus on addressing food security challenges, while ushering in what he described as “a new era of progress and transformation” to drive massive growth in Ghana’s agricultural sector.
“As President of GNAFF, I shall put the Association first in all my considerations,” he assured. “We will work hand in hand with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture as wealthy partners in the reset agenda, ensuring we play our role effectively as allies in building a resilient and prosperous agricultural economy.”
Outgoing President Nene Terkpertey Agblezie I, who led the Association through years of steady growth, expressed confidence in his successor, urging members to rally behind Mr. Kwetey to push GNAFF to greater heights.
The ceremony, which brought together government officials, industry leaders, and farmer cooperatives, signaled a renewed drive for innovation, collaboration, and economic empowerment in the agriculture and fisheries sectors
It can be recalled that Mr. Michael Tetteh Kwetey was elected President of the Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen (GNAFF) following a closely contested election held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at the Pentecost Convention Centre in Kumasi Brofoyedru, Ashanti Region.
He secured 70 out of 136 votes cast, narrowly defeating his opponent, Peter Kwesi Terkper, who polled 66 votes, a slim margin of just four votes.
Mr. Kwetey holds a Master of Laws (LLM) in Energy Law from the University of Ghana, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Central University College, and a Master of Administration in Oil and Gas Management from Coventry University.
He also earned a Master of Arts in Development Communication from the Ghana Institute of Journalism and a Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship from GIMPA.
