Weapon-wielding members of National Democratic Congress (NDC) vigilante group, Al-Qaida have launched attacks on some northern regional executives of the party at an executive council meeting to violently disrupt proceedings, allegedly on the orders of the Regional Chairman, Chief Alhaji Ibrahim Mobila Abdulai.
Although most of the executives escaped death, the Al-Qaida left their imprint-bodily injuries– on the Northern Regional Secretary, Hon. Salisu Be-Awuribe and other executives; including the Regional Communications Director for allegedly holding what the Chairman described as an “illegal meeting” at Global Dream Hotel without his consent and approval.
Hon. Be-Awuribe sustained injuries and also had his vehicle damaged by the angry vigilante group.
Information has it that the Al-Qaida members also destroyed furniture and other properties belonging to the hotel during the planned attack on the executives.
Meanwhile, this paper can say on authority that the party in the Northern Region is sharply divided with the Regional Chairman and the Regional Secretary at each other’s’ throat.
The vigilante group questioned the authority of the Regional Secretary, Salisu Be-Awuribe to convene a meeting of regional executive committee; including the regional functional executives, Members of Parliament (MPs) of the NDC in the Region and Constituency Executives without the involvement of the Chairman.
The Regional Secretary also a former District Chief Executive(DCE) for Central Gonja issued a letter dated 30th October, 2018 inviting the committee members to the meeting in accordance with article 22(11) of NDC constitution.
The meeting agenda, this paper gathered, was to discuss the approval of co-opted members of the constituency executive committees; formation of regional standing committee and approval of committee members; preparation and submission of regional report to the national executive committee; proposition of members for co-option into regional executive committee and recommendation of members regional council of elders to NEC for approval and Approval of Work Plan for 2019.
But, the Regional Chairman issued a counter-directive indicating his disapproval of that meeting to be held on 3rd November, 2018, saying that has had not “directed the Regional Secretary or received any request from members of the REC for any meeting whatsoever”.
He, therefore, warned members of the party against attending the said meeting, which he described as “illegal”, as it will amount to “gross insubordination towards his authority as their elected Regional Chairman.
