Former President John Dramani Mahama has confirmed what has been speculated on for long the next National Democratic Congress (NDC), which he would lead would amend Ghana’s constitution to enable him rule for more than eight (8) years.
In response to a question during his recent media engagement in the United Kingdom on Voice Of Afirica (VOA) John Mahama stated among others that “most importantly the NDC would look at the Constitution again, we have been operating this constitution for more than 26 years and I think that the time has come for us to look at it again and do some tweaking in order that we can have a proper constitutional environment in which we can grow the Economy.”
He stated further that “We have a four-year term like they have in America, not like other countries where they have a 5-year term and there is very little you can do in four years.”
Mahama’s comments have confirmed recent claims by the National Organizer of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Henry Nana Boakye that John Mahama intends to change Ghana’s constitution and extend his stay in power beyond the four-year term should he win the 2024 elections.
The NPP’s National Organizer recently told journalists that Mahama’s plan to extend his stay beyond the four-year term was one of the key reasons behind the ouster of Haruna Iddrisu and Muntaka Mubarak from the NDC’s leadership in Parliament. According to Nana B, Haruna Iddrisu and Muntaka were seriously not in favor of Mahama’s plans and the duo are believed to have set in motion a plan to stifle Mahama’s chances at winning the next elections.
