Placard-wielding supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), yesterday, thronged the precinct of Alisa Hotel in Accra, where a crunch meeting between all the ten flagbearer aspirants of the party and the Steering Committee was holding, to register their displeasure over the modalities for next month’s National Congress by the Special Electoral College.
Nine out of the 10 torchbearer hopefuls for the party in the 2024 election, with the exception Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, have petitioned the party leadership to centralize the 26 August, 2023, special delegates’ congress.
They are pushing for the party to allow all 931 delegates to gather at a single venue for the Super Delegates polls. This way, they argued, the process would be more efficient and representative of the party’s members.
However, some members have also argued that the status quo must be allowed to remain.
The New Crusading GUIDE gathered that the two agendas on the table for the meeting are: the alternances of the candidates and the petition from the nine candidates.
As at the time of going to press yesterday night, the meeting had just started.
After the August 26th congress, the list of presidential aspirants will be reduced from 10 to 5, who would canvass votes going into the 2024 elections.
Meanwhile, the NPP is in the process of compiling a new register for the special delegates’ congress, which has become necessary due to the passing of some delegates.
The General Secretary of the party, Justin Kodua Frimpong Koduah, assures that the new register will be finalized by the end of the week.
It is expected to consist of around 931 delegates who will form the special electoral college for the upcoming election.
This revision also involves removing names of deceased founding members and considering past national officers.
