Lawyer Kofi Osei, one of the contenders in the four man race for the Kumawu New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary seat has reacted to what he describes as vile propaganda in the media space allegedly coming from the camp of one of his opponents.
According to Lawyer Osei, who is a former Tema Port
Director, former Chairman of the NPP-USA branch in Pennsylvania and Chairman of
the NPP USA 2016 Election Fund Raising Committee, an issue of his dual
citizenship came up during his vetting which he emphatically addressed and the
issue was dismissed based on the precedent set by the Supreme Court in the
classic Zenator Rawlings case. However,
one of his opponents has continued to use the media to try to confuse delegates
in the Kumawu Constituency and to put him (Lawyer Osei) in a bad light.
In an interview with The New Crusading GUIDE newspaper, in response to the
issue of his dual citizenship raised in the Daily Dispatch yesterday, Lawyer
Osei narrated that “during vetting a specific question about my dual citizenship came up but the law as articulated
in the Zenator case clearly dispelled that and indicates that it is only at the
point of filing nomination at the national elections, currently planned for December 2020, that I will have to denounce my US
citizenship and not during the NPP
primaries currently planned for April 25th 2020. Therefore all four
contestants were passed including the sitting MP Philip Basoah.”
“So, I am quite surprised that after vetting I am still getting calls from my
constituents that one of my opponents is trying ever so hard to manipulate the
system to get me disqualified, but that won’t work”, Lawyer Osei stressed.
