Four political parties have called on President John Dramani Mahama to immediately revoke the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.
Speaking at the Coalition of Political Parties press conference in Accra, yesterday, the National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, condemned the President’s decision, stating, “The president’s action is neither grounded in law nor aligned with the principles of democracy. We caution that if today it is Chief Justice Torkornoo, tomorrow it could be any judge who dares to exercise independent judgment. This orchestrated assault on the judiciary threatens to dismantle the very institutional safeguards that protect our democracy.”
He further emphasized that Ghana must not be allowed to deteriorate into a state where political expediency overrides constitutional order.
The coalition comprising the New Patriotic Party (NPP), People’s National Party (PLP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) and National Democratic Party (NDP) further demanded strict adherence to Articles 146 and 296 of the Constitution in all future disciplinary proceedings involving justices of the Supreme Court.
Mr. Boakye affirmed the NPP’s commitment to defending the judiciary and upholding constitutional principles.

More so, the flagbearer of the People’s National Party (PNP) Janet Nabla, criticized the government for failing to uphold gender equity.
“Despite Parliament’s passage of the Affirmative Action Bill, which mandates a minimum 30% representation of women in leadership, President Mahama has refused to implement it,” she stated, adding that “Instead, we are witnessing a shocking underrepresentation—only 10% of cabinet roles, 16% of ministerial positions, and 14% of deputy ministerial appointments have been allocated to women under his administration.”
She further described the suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo as part of a broader pattern of marginalizing women in leadership.
“This is an unconstitutional and predetermined action targeting the few women who have risen to top positions through merit and resilience. The People’s National Party says enough is enough” she stated.
Madam Nabla futher called on women across the political spectrum to unite and demand accountability and respect for constitutional rights.
