Intelligence gathered from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, (KATH) in Kumasi revealed that the health facility is losing huge sums of monies as patients who visit the hospital are made to pay illegal fees to individuals; denying the hospital the needed revenue to run the health facility.
Many patients who undergo various surgeries in particular, pay various sums of monies to unauthorized persons before the surgeries are done.
It is interesting to note that patients with different surgical problems ranging from hernia, abdominal conditions, knee and joint conditions requiring metal fixing, breast surgeries, amputations, elective cesareans, surgical delivery and other similar conditions have to pay monies without official receipts.
Speaking to some patients who have gone through the procedure, they indicated that they are charged monies with the promise that the payments cover everything including drugs.
These patients claimed that they pay these monies because they are scared if they don’t pay the surgeries will not be done for them and would be made to carry their pain and burden home.
Some of them also alleged that even though they have registered with the National Health Insurance Authority, they are made to pay for the surgeries.
Majority of these patients said they have to borrow monies from family and friends, sell their properties to be able to pay for services at the hospital.
Thorough checks conducted by this paper revealed that some doctors have connived with certain individuals to pocket monies meant for the hospital as a results of the surgeries they conduct for patients who are brought to the .
The huge sums of monies collected for surgeries do not go into the hospital’s account since they are not receipted.
Information also revealed that auditors who recently went to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital to conduct auditing discovered the abnormalities but the situation still persists.
This paper gathered that although staff of the hospital are fully aware of the ongoing development, they remain silent for fear of victimization by the CEO hence the hospital continues to incur huge loses, after charging huge sums of monies from relatives who bring their patients to the hospital for surgery.
Stay tuned for more.
