Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, has been hit by a security scare in Vienna after unknown individuals broke into their hotel and stole valuables ahead of an international friendly.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety arrangements provided for the team during their stay, especially after it emerged that the hotel’s CCTV surveillance system was not operational at the time of the robbery.
Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, confirmed the development, stating that Austrian authorities are investigating both the theft and the apparent failure of the security system. He indicated that attention is now focused on determining when the cameras stopped working and who was in charge of monitoring them.
The robbers reportedly made away with $2,250 in cash and two Rolex watches belonging to members of the team, intensifying concerns about lapses in security at what is expected to be a high-profile accommodation facility.
The incident comes just hours before the Black Stars’ scheduled friendly match, potentially disrupting preparations as players and officials deal with the aftermath. Meanwhile, Austrian police have assured that efforts are underway to identify the perpetrators and recover the stolen items.
