The Socialist Movement of Ghana has expressed its profound solidarity with the people of Brazil, particularly those affected by the recent natural disaster in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
“We have been closely following the reports of devastating floods that have inundated vast regions, leaving a trail of destruction and human suffering in their wake.”
“According to recent updates from reputable sources such as Brasil de Fato, the floods have affected over 1.7 million individuals, disrupting lives, livelihoods, and communities. The impact on agriculture, especially the organic rice production of the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST- Landless Workers’ Movement), is particularly distressing. It is devastating to know that approximately 2,300 hectares of rice production, a source of sustenance and pride for many families, have been washed away by the relentless force of the flood.”
A statement released by the forum said “The loss of such a significant portion of organic rice production does not only represent an economic setback but also threatens food security for countless families who depend on these crops for their daily sustenance. Furthermore, the estimated losses of up to 10,000 metric tons of rice underlines the magnitude of the challenge confronting the affected communities in the aftermath of this disaster. In times of crisis like this, it is imperative that we stand in solidarity with our comrades and allies across the globe”.
“We extend our unflinching support to the people of Brazil, especially those within the MST who have been disproportionately impacted by this disaster. We call upon the Brazilian government to prioritize the needs of the most vulnerable and marginalized communities, ensuring that they receive the necessary assistance and resources to rebuild their lives and livelihoods. Additionally, we urge all progressive organizations, civil society groups, and individuals to mobilize support and solidarity efforts to aid the recovery and reconstruction efforts in the affected areas. Together, through collective action and solidarity, we can provide hope and assistance to those in need and reaffirm our commitment to building a better society free from exploitation.”
