Telecel Ghana has increased its capital investment by 60 per cent between 2023 and 2026, compared with the preceding four years, Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations Minister Samuel Nartey George has disclosed.
Speaking on Monday, September 7, at the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House in Accra, the Minister said the increase reflected the company’s growing commitment to Ghana’s telecommunications infrastructure and its efforts to improve network quality and coverage nationwide, marking a significant rise in capital investment since Telecel Ghana’s transition.
He noted that investment before the transition stood at approximately US$893 million, compared with current levels of about US$1.4 billion, moving towards US$1.5 billion.
As part of this investment, Telecel Ghana is undertaking approximately 2,900 site upgrades, migrating network infrastructure from 3G to 4G to expand access to faster mobile broadband services. The Minister said these upgrades form part of the company’s broader strategy to strengthen its network infrastructure and are expected to improve service delivery as modernisation continues.
Mr. Nartey George described the growth in investment as evidence of the importance of sustained private-sector investment in the telecommunications sector, noting that it demonstrates Telecel Ghana is committing significantly more resources to its network than during the preceding period.
His comments come amid broader government efforts to strengthen Ghana’s telecommunications infrastructure and create conditions that encourage operators to increase investment in network expansion and digital connectivity.
The Minister reiterated that this growth in investment is critical to the continued development of Ghana’s digital economy, as reliable, quality telecommunications infrastructure remains essential to businesses, households, and public services. With approximately 2,900 sites undergoing upgrades, Telecel Ghana’s investment is expected to further strengthen its 4G footprint and improve the quality and availability of mobile connectivity for customers across the country.
