Zonda Tec Ghana has officially unveiled the globally acclaimed CHERY automobile brand onto the Ghanaian market at a grand opening ceremony held at its Dzorwulu branch in Accra.

The colourful event brought together industry players, government officials and members of the business community to witness what the company described as a landmark partnership between Zonda Tec and one of the world’s most renowned automotive manufacturers.

In her address, the Chief Executive Officer of Zonda Tec Ghana, Madam Yang Yang, described the launch as the company’s “biggest step yet” in its nearly two-decade journey of transforming from a trading firm into a local vehicle assembling pioneer.

“For nearly 20 years, Zonda has strived to turn our vision of becoming West Africa’s leading commercial vehicle supplier into reality,” she stated. “Today, we welcome CHERY into our family, a partnership that defines automotive excellence for Ghana and West Africa.”

Madam Yang Yang paid glowing tribute to the Minister of Trade, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, for her instrumental role in securing the dealership for Ghana.

According to her, CHERY, a major automotive giant in China, had initially focused on larger markets such as South Africa and the Middle East.

However, she said the trade minister led a delegation to China and engaged CHERY’s top leadership in extensive discussions to make a case for Ghana.

“The Minister went to China and fought for the brand for Ghana,” Madam Yang Yang revealed. “She understands how difficult it is for women to run a brand and supported us fully, even assuring CHERY that Ghana could serve as a gateway to West Africa and beyond.”

Zonda Tec announced that it is introducing a full line of CHERY vehicles, including the Tiggo 2 Pro, Tiggo 7 Pro Max, Tiggo 9 and hybrid models.

Madam Yang Yang explained that the vehicles were selected with the Ghanaian consumer in mind, focusing on three key promises: fuel efficiency, adaptability to local road conditions and luxury at an accessible price.

She noted that the SUVs come with 1.5-litre and 1.5-litre turbocharged engines designed to deliver performance and efficiency, while featuring strong suspension systems and generous ground clearance suitable for Ghana’s roads.

“Ghanaians should not have to compromise on safety, quality and luxury because of cost,” she stressed. “We are bringing brand new, high-technology vehicles at competitive prices.”

She further disclosed that CHERY vehicles will be locally assembled at Zonda Tec’s state-of-the-art plant in Tema, with plans to commission a new Phase 3 automotive assembly line by June this year.

Also addressing the gathering, Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Industries (AGI), Mr. Seth Twum – Akwaboah commended Zonda Tec for deepening local assembly and manufacturing.

He said he had personally visited the Tema plant and was impressed with the ongoing assembly of trucks and pick-ups.

“As an industry association, we are excited about products made in Ghana,” he said. “What Zonda Tec is doing aligns with the vision of strengthening local manufacturing and driving job creation.”

Mr. Akwaboah emphasised that expanding assembly operations and eventually producing vehicle parts locally would significantly boost Ghana’s industrialisation agenda and support the government’s 24-hour economy policy.

“If manufacturing thrives and runs efficiently, it will drive services, create jobs and stimulate economic growth,” he noted.

Ghana remains a major vehicle import hub in West Africa, with thousands of vehicles arriving at its ports monthly. However, industry players say high costs often push consumers towards used vehicles.

With the introduction of CHERY and plans for expanded local assembly, Zonda Tec says it aims to change that narrative by offering affordable brand-new vehicles assembled in Ghana.

The launch marks a significant development in Ghana’s growing automotive sector and signals renewed confidence in the country’s potential as a regional automobile assembly hub.
