The current Galamsey problem is not only leading to still births and children being born with deformities as a result of high levels of poisonous chemicals but also severe forms of child exploitation leading to deaths of Ghana’s future leaders with escalating threat of mercury poisoning affecting children; OAfrica together with Tiger eye in an undercover documentary titled GHANA’S GALAMSEY GENERATION gives graphic evidence of the horrors child experience by working in “Galamsey” fields in Ghana.
The exposure to mercury during these activities poses severe health risks, including damage to the central nervous system. Child labor, health hazards, limited access to education, environmental degradation, and social issues compound the impacts of “Galamsey.” The film produced by Tiger Eye PI exposes the ripple effect of the creation of each mine: ecological destruction, human rights abuse, an influx of illegal drugs and attracts human trafficking for underage labour and prostitution. Each mine functions as a blot on the landscape, tainting lives miles away. OAfrica is a Ghanaian charity that empowers children and young adults in need of care and protection. #EndChildLabourInGalamsey.
The aim is to get all the children in Ghana out of “Galamsey”, to formalize the sector and to insist on a transition to mercury-free methods in legal small-scale mining. • Impact on Children: 1. Opting out of Schooling: Working in the mines promises easy money, therefore keeping children as young as nine out of school. 2. Poisoning: Mercury, when absorbed into the bloodstream, can penetrate the blood-brain barrier, leading to irreversible damage to the central nervous system.
This threatens the cognitive development and overall health of our children, robbing them of the potential for a healthy and prosperous future. 3. Exposure to drugs and illegal activities: the mines attracted drug pushers and prostitution and the children are roped into to the lifestyle. 4. Physical Risk: falling in to the open, flooded mines is a very real risk that kills children from drowning every day. Stay tuned
