The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has revealed that 280 corruption and corruption-related cases are currently under investigation under the government’s accountability initiative, Operation Uncover All Roots (ORAL).
Speaking on JoyNews on Monday, January 26, Mr Kwakye Ofosu said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) introduced ORAL as a core mechanism to ensure that public office holders are held accountable for alleged wrongdoing.
According to him, the ORAL Preparatory Committee compiled information on 280 suspected cases and submitted its findings to the Attorney General, who has since ordered investigations into every single case.
“The committee presented a report containing 280 cases, and the Attorney General has commissioned investigations into each of them,” he stated, stressing that the report itself could not be used as the basis for prosecutions without proper investigations.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu explained that allegations alone cannot justify arrests or convictions, noting that due process must be followed in line with Ghanaian law.
Reflecting on Ghana’s anti-corruption record, he said the scale of alleged waste and abuse of public resources under the previous administration made a change in government inevitable.
“There was simply too much waste, corruption and theft of public resources,” he said, adding that media reports on successive scandals had heightened public frustration and demand for accountability.
Providing an update on progress, the minister disclosed that more than 100 individuals have already been questioned, with some arrested, detained, granted bail, or currently standing trial.
He further revealed that over 20 cases have reached advanced stages, with several already filed in court by the Attorney General.
While acknowledging public impatience for swift outcomes, Mr Kwakye Ofosu urged Ghanaians to allow the legal process to run its course, emphasising that ORAL must operate strictly within the law.
“Once matters are before the courts, timelines are determined by the judiciary, not the government,” he said, adding that fairness and justice remain central to the anti-corruption fight.
“Justice must be done, and it must be done fairly. That is the guiding principle of this process.”
