Deputy Minister of Works and Housing, Dr. Prince Hamid Armah, has stated that the concept of smart cities aligns perfectly with government aspirations to achieve inclusiveness and sustainable development.
Speaking at the 24th edition of the Ghana Industrialization week on Urbanization and Smart Cities in Accra on 26th June 2024, Dr. Armah noted that “currently, about 58% of Ghana’s population lives in urban areas, with an urbanization rate of approximately 3.4% per year and this trend, while presenting numerous opportunities, also brings forth significant challenges that require innovative and sustainable solutions.
“One of the most promising solutions to these challenges is the development of smart cities. A smart city leverages technology, data, and innovation to enhance the quality of life for its residents, improve the efficiency of services, and promote sustainable development. “
He added that the government’s policies, such as the Digital Ghana Agenda, aims to integrate technology into every aspect of urban life, ensuring that our cities are not only connected but also efficient and resilient, and that “Smart cities are built on robust infrastructure and seamless connectivity, which includes high-speed internet, efficient transportation systems, and reliable energy supply.”
Due to this, the government has initiated several infrastructure projects to support this vision, such as the National Broadband Infrastructure Project, which aims to provide high-speed internet access across the country. Additionally, the implementation of smart grid technology in the energy sector ensures a more reliable and efficient power supply, critical for both residential and industrial needs.
Hon. Armah emphasised that technology is at the heart of a smart city, from smart grids and intelligent transportation systems to digital governance and e-services. The integration of technology can revolutionize the way we live and work.
“We must foster a culture of innovation, support tech startups, and create an ecosystem that encourages technological advancements.”
Hon.Armah also indicated that government’s support for innovation symbolises the establishment of the Ghana Innovation Hub, a centre designed to nurture tech start-ups and drive technological entrepreneurship.
This initiative, along with government policies on digital literacy and STEM education, aims to build a technologically proficient workforce capable of sustaining our smart city ambitions.
“As the government, we are committed to creating an enabling environment that supports innovation and sustainable development. This includes policy frameworks, regulatory reforms, and incentives that encourage private sector participation in the development of smart cities,” he stressed.
