Jacobu, Ashanti Region — One person has been confirmed dead and several others injured following a confrontation between suspected illegal miners and the Ghana Police Service at Jacobu in the Amansie Central District.
The incident, described by authorities as “unfortunate and avoidable,” occurred during an operation involving the police and individuals believed to be engaged in illegal mining activities. Videos circulating on social media show tense scenes from the clash, which escalated into violence.
In a public statement issued on Monday, the Minister of State for the Ashanti Region, Hon. Dr. Frank Amoakohene, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and sympathy for those affected. He wished the injured a speedy recovery and urged calm in the aftermath of the incident.
Dr. Amoakohene called on citizens to cooperate fully with law enforcement officers and to respect lawful orders, warning against confrontations that threaten public safety. He stressed that no one should engage the police in a manner that undermines law and order.
The Minister also commended the Ghana Police Service for its efforts to maintain peace and assured the public of government’s continued support for the police and other security agencies in the discharge of their lawful duties.
According to the statement, investigations into the incident are ongoing. Dr. Amoakohene said authorities would pursue the matter to its logical conclusion and ensure that anyone found to have acted unlawfully is dealt with in accordance with the law.
He further appealed to community leaders, youth groups and other stakeholders in Jacobu and its environs to help restore calm and ensure that lawful processes are respected.
The government says it remains committed to protecting lives, property and public peace as investigations continue.
