Some Aggrieved youth of Akwatia in the Denkyembour District of the Eastern Region have accused some sub chiefs in Akwatia of Selling lands, forest reserves, and river banks to illegal miners to mine gold and diamonds without authorization.
The act, they said has been posing severe health risk to residents of the area as regards the poisoning and pollution of their drinking water and crops. Roads leading to houses and residential facilities have also been destroyed by the illegal miners.
The youth have specifically mentioned the names of Abusua Panin Kofi Antwi, Nana Boadu, alias D, and the Omankrado of Akwatia, Baffour Afisa III, as the people behind the illegal sale of the lands to the illegal miners.
“As I speak to you, the illegal miners have dug and excavated the Moore River, the source of drinking water for the people. They have also dug through the main bridge connecting Akwatia and Kade. This poses a great danger to motorists and pedestrians based on the fact that a flood during rainfall could sweep pedestrians and motorists away. We are therefore appealing to the President and the Minister of Interiors and the Mines and Energy Minister to bring their taskforce to arrest the people involved to bring sanity to the area’, he stated.
