The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) has welcomed the policy proposal of the Vice-President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to leverage the private sector to improve educational infrastructure in the country.
In a meeting with CHASS on Monday, April 22, 2024, Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia outlined a groundbreaking policy proposal to revolutionize Ghana’s education sector, aiming to harness the private sector to improve educational infrastructure, enhance the quality of education, and reduce the infrastructure deficit.
According to Dr. Bawumia, the proposal, first announced in February, seeks to encourage private investment in building critical infrastructure such as dormitories and classrooms. The government will then rent these facilities over a period of years before taking ownership. This innovative approach is expected to streamline government expenditure and avoid delays in infrastructure projects.
Additionally, the government will also lease buses for schools, a new mode of financing that will avoid huge initial government outlays through the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) and delays in the completion of infrastructure projects in senior high schools.
CHASS leaders welcomed the proposal, praising its potential to transform the education sector. They also seized the opportunity to contribute to the discussion, offering insights on enhancing the free Senior High School Policy and other aspects of education
