The Government of Ghana has dismissed as false claims that it demanded money from the family of the late Nana Agyei Ahyia to facilitate their travel to Latvia.
In a statement issued on Monday, February 2, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs described as misleading social media allegations that the government mishandled arrangements to support the family’s quest for justice following the death of the Ghanaian student at Riga Technical University.
The Ministry said it has maintained continuous and transparent engagement with the family and has neither requested nor received any payment in relation to the travel arrangements.
It stressed that the Government of Ghana is fully financing the travel of two nominated family members and a pathologist to Latvia.
According to the Ministry, the planned trip, originally scheduled for January 31, 2026, was delayed due to challenges with visa issuance. It explained that the delay occurred because the family members failed to present all required documents during their visa appointments.
“In furtherance of this commitment, the Ministry actively facilitated the visa application process for the nominated family members. However, the travel did not take place as scheduled due to delays in visa issuance by the relevant authorities, arising from incomplete documentation submitted at the time of the appointments,” the statement said.
The Ministry noted that once the outstanding documents were provided, it promptly ensured their submission to the appropriate embassy.
It further clarified that the document in the possession of the deceased’s mother was not a confirmed airline ticket but a travel itinerary generated solely to support the visa application process. Consequently, travel could not proceed since the passports remained with the embassy.
The Ministry condemned the circulation of contrary claims, describing them as deliberate distortions of fact that undermine public confidence and distract from efforts to establish the truth surrounding the student’s death.
It reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Ghanaians abroad and to pursuing justice for the late Nana Agyei Ahyia.
